From one minibus at the launch of the service in 1981, Community Wheels now has 10 vehicles. The minibuses can be hired by members of Community Action Dacorum who are concerned with the welfare of the elderly, disabled and young people. These are 12 to 16 passenger vehicles; 8 are equipped with tail lifts and removable seats so that wheelchairs can be accommodated. Hire charges are kept as low as possible and to ensure sufficient income to support the service, local businesses have “adopted” vehicles. Current Community Wheels prices (inclusive of diesel fuel, insurance and AA recovery) are as follows:
Up to 30 miles £30.00 (minimum hire charge)
or if more than 30 miles £ 1.00 per mile for all miles up to and including 100 miles then an additional 90p per mile for all miles over 100
A number of local businesses/organisations support Community Wheels through their sponsorship of individual buses. Current sponsors are
- Box Moor Trust
- Dacorum Community Trust
- William Sutton Housing Association
- Hemel Hempstead Day Centre
As a part of the responsible position Community Transport takes regarding the driving of the Community Wheels minibuses, a driver assessor is employed. We can assess drivers for the Hertfordshire County Council minibus certificate.
With the support of a dedicated team of volunteers, Community Action Dacorum also provides a social car scheme for individuals who have difficulty using public transport or taxis. A realistic charge to the client is agreed at the time of booking based on mileage and can be paid in cash/cheque or Dacorum Travel Vouchers. A discount is given to Dacorum Card holders. Users of the scheme are required to register with the service.
