Founded in 2001, Herts Interpreting and Translation Service (HITS) provides language support services  to NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, Criminal Justice agencies, voluntary sector organisations and commercial and private clients throughout Herts, Beds, Bucks, Oxon, Milton Keynes and beyond.

Face-to Face Interpreting  - For those occasions when a personal presence is required.  We are able to draw from a register of more than 500 trained and qualified   professional interpreters.

Telephone Interpreting - For those occasions when an immediate response is required.

Document Translation - We are able to provide reliable translation in a wide range of languages.  Whenever possible we use translators qualified to the level of Diploma in Translation.

Language Assessment - For any organisation wishing to gauge the language skills of members of staff, we offer formal subject specific assessments conducted by qualified interpreters.

As a registered training and examination centre for the Chartered Institute of Linguists, HITS trains its interpreters to the standard of the Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting.  This means that HITS interpreters are fluent and literate in both target languages, conversant with the terminology across a wide range of public services and committed to the ethics of public service interpreting (e.g. impartiality and confidentiality).  We currently offer more than 90 languages and dialects including communication support services for deaf people.

We offer a number of training courses for organisations wishing to enhance the skills for their bi-lingual staff/community interpreters and individuals looking to train as an interpreter and gain a professional qualification.  We currently deliver the following courses

  • Introduction to Public Service Interpreting
  • Diploma in Public Service Interpreting
  • Working with Interpreters
  • Setting up an Interpreting Service
